The Fellowship Experience

Playworks Kickball

Root Cause's year round fellowship programs provides undergraduates, young professionals, and graduate students with the opportunity to explore the research and consulting space in the nonprofit sector and learn more about Root Cause’s role in the social impact market. Our fellows are exposed to a diverse array of projects and work closely with senior staff within and outside of their appointed department.

We strongly believe in supplying our fellows with a set of essential tools that parallel on-the-job training for full-time staff. These trainings provide a range of skills, from technical to social, to help provide fellows with a robust toolbox and expand their knowledge of Root Cause departmental work.

Sample training topics

Networking: Building your network and sustaining long-term contacts

Data Analysis: Learning efficient and effective approaches to synthesizing, analyzing, and presenting large data sets

Business Development: Understanding the nonprofit economy and identifying key revenue sources and examining the cultivation/sales process

Business Planning: Outlining the Root Cause apporach from need to opportunity and social impact model by examining a Root Cause consulting case study or current engagement

Public School Meals Providing a Lever for Child Health: Social impact strategy presentation on Root Cause collaboration with Boston Public Schools (BPS) and Project Bread to recommend best practices for BPS

Effective Brainstorming: Strategies to facilitate and get the most out of a brainstorming session

CitySprouts 2010 RC training

Root Cause fellowship sessions comprise a handful of eager and energetic individuals who share the Root Cause experience and build a supportive community among eachother and within Root Cause. Fellows enjoy a number of community-building activities with past Innovators like kickball with Playworks and gardening with CitySprouts. In addition, fellows are encouraged to attend conferences and other events relating to social innovation in the Boston area, to expand their network and connect with other exciting nonprofits in the region.

Testimonials:

Zeina Fayyaz

As a senior at Harvard College, Zeina Fayyaz spent the summer of 2009 with Root Cause's Social Innovation Forum. Zeina is now one of seven former fellows that have been hired on as full time employees; she is a Program Coordinator with the Social Innovation Forum. “As a fellow with the Social Innovation Forum the summer of 2009, I felt personally accountable for significant pieces of the department's work, which I loved. Root Cause's inclusiveness and genuine appreciation of its fellows and associates was what drew me to pursue a full time position with the Forum.”

Tim Spittle

"I've been given so much responsibility from early on that it has really forced me to produce quality work, go beyond what I thought I could do, and develop a lot of new skills. In particular I have been involved with managing the distribution of our School Readiness reports, creating an efficient financial analysis methodology, and documenting our internal methodology in order to continually refine our process as we grow," said Tim Spittle, a third year student at Northeastern University who joined Root Cause for 6 months as part of the Northeastern co-op program.

Alex Swartsel

"I can't think of a better place to learn about social innovation and impact than Root Cause -- this organization practices what it preaches, and offers its fellows hands-on experience in some of the most exciting work in the field today," said Alex Swartsel, a student at the Yale School of Management who joined Public Innovators as a summer 2010 fellow. "The sense of collaboration and partnership among permanent staff and fellows is extraordinary."
