Fall 2010 Fellowship

Root Cause offers fall fellowships for motivated students and young professionals. Root Cause fall fellowships are a great opportunity to join a dynamic organization and to be involved with cutting edge work in the exciting field of social innovation. These fellowships will be based out of our Cambridge, MA office, located by the Lechmere T Station (next to the CambridgeSide Galleria).

The fall fellowship program runs from September to December. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until Friday, August 20th.

Root Cause offers fellowships in a variety of departments, and fellows selected for positions will be allocated to one or more departments based on their interests and the needs of the organization. Applicants should submit one resume and cover letter that reflect skills and experiences relevant to any or all of the positions listed below. Once the application has been received, applicants will be directed to a survey where they can specify their preference in positions.

Fellowship Positions

SOCIAL IMPACT RESEARCH

Social Impact Research, Root Cause’s research division, seeks dynamic and experienced research fellows to support the development of its social issue and organization research reports. This position requires individuals who can effectively execute upon research deliverables in an entrepreneurial environment. There will be an opportunity to participate in a variety of projects including, but not limited to: assisting on research and analysis of social issues, collecting and analyzing data from nonprofits, and conducting research for customized projects. Successful applicants will have very strong research, analysis and presentation skills.

 

PUBLIC INNOVATORS

Public Innovators, which supports government  leaders at across the nation who are ensuring the creation and growth of the most efficient, effective, and sustainable solutions to pressing social problems, seeks an fellow to assist with current initiatives already underway, as well as to help in the cultivation of new opportunities for government-based efforts to support social innovation. Responsibilities may include background research into state- and city-based work, supporting Root Cause’s city and state learning communities, research on funding opportunities, drafting profiles on leading public innovators, utilizing social media, developing content for new initiatives, and other programmatic support.

 

SOCIAL INNOVATION FORUM

The Social Innovation Forum, Root Cause’s strategic philanthropy program, seeks a fellow to manage selection of 2011 Social Innovators. The fellow will coordinate and participate in the evaluation committee meetings and interview sessions. In addition, the fellow will spearhead the analysis of evaluations for the review committees and provide feedback to applicants that are not selected. Furthermore, the Social Innovation Forum will also be preparing a report on our previous year's Innovators' performance on key measures as defined during the consulting process. The fellow will be deeply involved in gathering and compiling data for this report and preparing an event to present the results.

 

KNOWLEDGE SHARING

Root Cause is seeking a fellow to assist with our knowledge management and communications efforts. Fellows in this department will have the opportunity to work closely with and learn from all other departments in the organization, as well as to participate in the production and promotion of research pieces demonstrating new ideas in the field of social entrepreneurship and innovation. Areas of responsibility may include, but are not limited to, the following: conducting literature reviews for new articles; drafting and editing new articles; developing content for our website and social media efforts; and supporting department operations (e.g., organizing/managing media mentions and marketing material requests).

 

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The business development fellow will provide support to the business development team. The fellow will work on research projects on the nonprofit sector, as well as support in grant writing and preparation of materials to represent Root Cause's work. The fellow’s work will include researching potential partners as well as documenting, tracking, and analyzing current engagements. The position involves the opportunity to develop a deep knowledge of the organization's data management system and help refine its processes, as well as the opportunity to work on special projects for the CEO and consulting staff.

 

ROOT CAUSE CONSULTING

Root Cause’s consulting practice seeks a research fellow to support various strategy and business planning engagements and internal projects. Fellows will conduct research to gather relevant data and materials to support strategic arguments/hypotheses, as well as analyze and organize data into useful formats and make recommendations for the next course of action. Fellows will draft, edit, format, and help finalize sections of business plan documents and other written deliverables, and as needed produce deliverables in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. in preparation for client meetings. The fellow will help in Root Cause’s new efforts to document best practices and learnings from prior engagements to refine the consulting process and methodology and prepare, produce, and disseminate knowledge management materials to the Root Cause team.

 

LEGAL

The operations team seeks a fellow to assist in the research of various legal issues with the objective to improve the organization’s internal knowledge and policies and to uncover possible exposure. Some of the issues the legal fellow will focus on include intellectual property rights, human resources policies, contractor and employee delineation, employee definitions, and labor law compliance. The fellow will also help to ensure compliance with new lobbying and advocacy laws on the state and federal levels. The fellow will have the opportunity the take part in risk assessment in these areas and others as they arise with our pro-bono legal team. Only part-time candidates will be considered for the legal fellow role.

 

Qualifications:

  • A goal-oriented work style, with a willingness to bring new ideas to the table, take risks, and learn in an ambiguous and intellectually challenging environment
  • A team player, who pitches in to help others or take on additional responsibilities as needed
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented with excellent time management skills
  • Ability to synthesize data and present clearly and logically-structured strategic recommendations
  • Ability to convey ideas clearly through written and spoken communications
  • Knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and internet research is a must
  • Knowledge of Dreamweaver, HTML, Drupal, Salesforce, Vertical Response or InDesign is a plus but not required
  • Fellows will need to bring their own laptop

Compensation Details/Other Benefits:

Working with Root Cause provides significant opportunities for professional growth and development. Fellows are often able to attend various events, meetings, networking opportunities, and trainings. We are eager to help fellows craft projects that help meet their education and career goals. References and/or letters of recommendation will be available to fellows who thrive in these positions. We will provide T-passes to each fellow and may be able to offer a small number of stipends. Furthermore, we are eager to work with colleges or programs that offer stipends, work-study matches or provide academic credit.

Applications without cover letters will not be considered. Applications are due on August 20th, but will be reviewed on a rolling basis until that time.

Please note: preference for most positions will be given to applicants who can work 40 hours per week (full time) for the full fellowship. We do welcome candidates who can work a minimum of two days a week; however, some departments will require part-time fellows to commit for two full semesters (Sept-May). You will be asked to list your availability in a survey you receive after you submit your application.
