Build Grantee Capacity

You’ve made your grants. Now cultivate your grantees’ skillsets to help them use these grants even more effectively.

Give your grantees—and your investment in them—the greatest opportunity for success. Root Cause works with your grantees on your behalf, with technical assistance, training, and tools. Your grantees will achieve their goals more efficiently, you’ll gain insight into the aggregated results of your grantmaking, and together you’ll build a shared language and set of priorities.

We’ll help you and your grantees develop a rigorous hypothesis for how their work will measurably help more people reach key life milestones, an effort that can resonate in and inform their work going forward. Our work with grantees centers on what we have identified as the five essential dimensions of an organization’s capacity: Organizational Culture & Commitment, Theory of Change, Evidence Informed Practice, Measurement System, and Equity Lens.

Over the years, we have built and refined a five-part measurement and evaluation assessment tool that has been used by hundreds of organizations to look at these dimensions of their work and that of their grantees. We use this assessment as a starting point for shared planning, and for developing frameworks for grantee support.

Why Root Cause

Our consultants are experienced in training and supporting organizations to use our Assessment Tool, enhancing their work and giving the whole grantee cohort a shared vocabulary and focus. In recent engagements with such funders as W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Duke Endowment, Root Cause has empowered grantee leaders to track performance, learn from data, and use that knowledge to make management decisions focused on continuous improvement—while helping funders do the same. Our flexible, practical, and action-oriented approach meets grantees where they are and helps them get to where they (and their funders) want them to be.

“Root Cause has been a partner in our evolving strategies to design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate our innovation. Root Cause’s encouragement and support has been instrumental in enabling our capacity to move beyond grant support to sustain our efforts through a new model of membership fees and fee-for-service technical consultation.” —Dr. Paul Dworkin, Founder, Help Me Grow; Executive Vice-President, Community Child Health Director, Office for Community Child Health, Connecticut Children's Medical Center
